CCD seeks speedy legislative action on disability bill

The Centre for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD) has enjoined the leadership of the National Assembly to fast track the final phase of the passage of the disability bill through the constitution of the Join Conference of the National Assembly on the disability bill.

Rising from a Disability Roundtable on the Nigeria Disability Bill held in Abuja, the group expressed appreciation over the commitment of President Muhammadu Buhari-led government on disability issues to the extent of making two appointments (Senior Special Assistant and Special Assistant) on disability matters, which is a demonstration of political will of promoting disability inclusion.

They also commended the Senate President, Bukola Saraki and the Speaker of House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara as well as the entire member of the 8th Session of the National Assembly for the passage of the Nigeria Disability Bill for the fourth time.

CCD’s Executive Director, Mr David Anyaele in a statement made available to The Guardian lauded he National Assembly for passing disability bills, which is in line with the Article 33 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

The group noted that it behooves on well meaning Nigerians to scale up advocacy and engagement with critical stakeholders for the harmonisation of the bill by the National Assembly, and the endorsement of President Muhammadu Buhari on the disability bill.

Enjoining media practitioners to continue to support their cause through the reportage of disability issues, they urged other State governments to emulate Plateau, Bauchi, Ekiti and Lagos States by passing disability laws so as to reduce the hardship associated with persons with disability.

The group further appealed to state and non-state actors, especially development partners to support the campaign for the passage of the disability bill.
